Although this article (link below) mentions Obama only in passing, it brought to mind the wool our government pulls over our eyes when it comes to the Middle East.
If you have read the news in the past few days, you will know that Israel has started a large bombing and ground campaign on the Gaza Strip. And though all news outlets here in America are telling us that Israel is targeting Hamas only, innocent civilians, women, and children are dying more so than any Hamas fighter.
I dont claim to know all the facts, but this is what has been happening.
A few months ago a seemingly lasting ceasefire was agreed to by both sides. And although it lasted for a good chunk of the year, Israel continued its economic stranglehold on Palestine and the Gaza Strip. Although Israel's bombs and gun fire werent killing civilians, Israel restricted the flow of food, medicine, and humanitarian aid into Palestine. Elder men and women passed away without this basic care. Children starved and died without this food. Israel basically put its arm around the Gaza strips neck, while posturing itself as peaceful to its parent nation, the United States.
"Ehud Olmert, Israel's prime minister, pleaded that Israel wanted "quiet" - a continuation of the truce - while Hamas chose "terror", forcing him to act. But what is Israel's idea of a truce? It is very simple: Palestinians have the right to remain silent while Israel starves them, kills them and continues to violently colonize their land."
If another country came in, bombed you and killed more innocent civilians than fighters, then withdrew due to a ceasefire, only to DENY YOU AID AND FOOD, without which your nation was crippled and was dying from within (literally), wouldnt you be angry enough to fight back? But Palestine and Hamas did not. They wanted the ceasefire. (By the way, the control of this supply has happened for years, its just worse now.)
With the cease fire ended (due to the time frame they set on it), Israel, without any known cause, blew up a bridge in Gaza strip that killed more people.
This is what is hidden from you in the newspapers today. Israel struck first after the cease fire ended without ANY known cause. So, as any government trying to protect their people and lands, Hamas and Palestine responded in kind.
Hamas has concetrated their fire on military bases and security compound, though some innocent casualties have happened. While Israel has targeted police buildings in very populated neighborhoods. "Israel claims most of the dead were Hamas "terrorists". In fact, the targets were police stations in dense residential areas, and the dead included many police officers and other civilians. Under international law, police officers are civilians, and targeting them is no less a war crime than aiming at other civilians."
This is terrorism. If Israel and America is calling Hamas terrorist's, then what do they call the actions they are taking against them? The coin flips both ways. We civilians allow this to happen. We don't hold our government and its friend responsible for anything, ever. We have violated almost every international law with our war on terrorism, yet somehow we are saviors and not terrorists.
I am not saying that Hamas is the most peace loving group either. They are and have been just as violent. But they were democratically elected by their people. A people who were sick of Israel pushing them around.
Our leaders just don't allow Israel to do his, they praise it!
This is where Obama comes in. Many were hoping he would take a more hardline stance on Israel than his predecessors, but he has now come out and endorsed Israel's bombing of Palestine. He has endorsed bombing of innocent peopel and sanctions that starve children. He is not the progressive you all thought of him as. But why would he do this? Could he really just be a good guy who wants to defend Palestine, but instead knows that going against Israel is political suicide? Could be. But a human should be measured by how they stand up to adversity when promoting their inner most beliefs, not by if it will ruin his career if he chooses a different path than every president before him.
We all have had blinds pulled over our eyes by the media and our leaders. We need to wake up. If Obama is taking the side of war criminals and terrorists, then what does that say about our government and who you elected as our leader? In his speeches he demanded change, but if his stance on Israel is any evidence, then the change you all were hoping for is the same change Bush promised, Clinton promised, Bush Sr promised. And on and on and on.
Presidents our bought and sold. It will never change.
If you want real change get the word out about whats happening. Read up on the conflict, not just what your newspaper and television shows tell you. Question everything you read to see if it holds ground.
Change someones mind. Until the citizens of this world can see past the lies of their governments, only then we can begin true change.
